The Evolution of the Reserve Bank of India's Emblem

From Colonial Roots to National Identity

The Reserve Bank of India's logo, featuring a lion and a palm tree, holds a rich history that reflects India's journey from colonial rule to independence. The lion represents courage and strength, while the palm tree symbolizes growth and prosperity.

Initially, the bank's emblem was derived from the East India Company's original seal, which featured a lion and a palm tree. However, in 1935, the tiger, India's national animal, replaced the lion to reflect the country's newfound independence.

The emblem's design process involved selecting the right image to represent the bank's values and mission. The Board of Directors entrusted a Madras firm with the task of stamping share certificates and decided that the East India Company Double Mohur with the sketch of the Lion and Palm Tree was the most suitable option.
